Client Advocacy
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands offers personal and legal advocacy to help survivors deal with the impact the assault may have had on all aspects of life. We connect our clients and their families to community resources that can help with any concerns that impact a survivor’s healing process. Our goal is to not let survivors fall through the cracks without the support and resources they deserve, from the immediate crisis to the long-term.
Personal Advocacy
STSM staff and advocates are all trained to provide personal advocacy. Common issues addressed through personal advocacy include:
- Assistance with relocation if the survivor loses their home as a result of the assault
- Providing referrals to help with addiction or medication needs
- Help with excuses for school or work to attend counseling
- Transportation to and from STSM’s offices for counseling sessions
Legal Advocacy
The criminal justice system is complicated and can be difficult to navigate. STSM crisis interventionists and legal advocates are specially trained to provide legal advocacy. Some of the things our legal advocates can help with include:
- Accompaniment to appointments with law enforcement for line ups, interviews, and to provide statements
- Assistance contacting law enforcement to file a report or follow up on an investigation
- Accompaniment to court for bond hearings or trial
- Support during a civil suit related to the assault
